These showers in the national capital coincided with the ongoing initiatives by the city government to explore the concept of ‘artificial rain’ as a measure to address the pollution challenges in the area.

Concurrently, various monitoring stations across Delhi reported an air quality index (AQI) of less than 100 this morning, a notable improvement from the nighttime readings that exceeded 400.

The Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC) anticipates episodes of light, intermittent rainfall in Delhi-NCR and its adjacent areas, including Rajiv Chowk, ITO, India Gate, Akshardham, Safdarjung, RK Puram, and Lajpat Nagar on Friday morning.

Furthermore, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Faridabad, Jind, Panipat, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar, Kosali, Mahendargarh, Narnaul, Hodal (Haryana), Meerut, Modinagar, Kithor, Bulandshahar, Jahangirabad, Anupshahar, Bahajoi, Pahasu, Debai, Narora, Gabhana, Atrauli, and Aligarh are also expected to witness showers.

On Wednesday, Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, convened a meeting with a team from IIT-Kanpur to explore the feasibility of inducing artificial rainfall through cloud seeding to alleviate the Air Quality Index (AQI) concerns in the national capital. Post the discussion, the minister mentioned that artificial rain could potentially be implemented on November 20-21, contingent on favorable cloudy weather conditions.

In a proactive move, the Delhi government has committed to covering the entire expense associated with artificial rain to address the severe air pollution in the city. Officials, cited by PTI, reported that the chief secretary has been instructed to present the government’s stance before the Supreme Court on Friday.

If the decision receives backing from the central government, the Delhi administration aims to execute the first instance of artificial rain in the city by November 20, as indicated on Thursday.

The process of inducing artificial rain through cloud seeding entails the dispersal of substances into the air to stimulate condensation, culminating in precipitation. Silver iodide, potassium iodide, and dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) are among the most frequently employed agents for cloud seeding. These substances act as nuclei around which water vapor can condense, ultimately fostering the development of rain or snow.

This technique of weather modification has found application in diverse parts of the globe, particularly in areas grappling with water scarcity or drought conditions.
